This was one of the most surprising photos I’ve ever taken. Humpback Whales can be the size of school buses and will often let big puffs of water every few minutes. You’ll usually know when they’re around. This time I was caught completely off guard.

There was a group of Rhinoceros Auklets (little Puffin-like birds) searching for fish nearby so I decided to approach. I began to photograph them and then all of a sudden a Humpback Whale lunged out of the water multiple times. Here is one of the photos from that encounter as it began to descend back to the depths.
